Run Deer Run

Happy 2016!

January 04, 2016  /  Run Deer Run

Happy New Year from the Deers!

What a year 2015 was for us. We released a record, toured around Western Canada and played a ton of local Calgary shows. We met many amazing people, a big highlight for both of us. As we forge ahead into the new year, connection will be our theme. Making music that we feel personally connected to and proud of, and continuing to nourish the great relationships that we’ve made so far.

Calgary will get some well-deserved time in the Canadian music spotlight this year, with the opening of the National Music Centre and hosting the Juno Awards. Really, these things are cherries on top of the strong foundation of our music community, and it’s exciting that we’ll get to show off our diverse music scene to the country. Each year we get better and stronger and there is still much work to do in order to maintain our momentum.

Please join us in supporting Calgary’s music scene this year. There are many ways in which you can do that. Purchasing local music and attending shows are obvious ones, and things like frequenting businesses that support local music, volunteering at festivals or events and spreading the word about all of the above help too. Feel free to hit us up while you’re doing these things...chances are good that we’ll join you.

All our best for an incredible 2016. We’ll see you out there!

Love,

The Deers

2015 Wrap Up

November 16, 2015  /  Run Deer Run

As we wrap up our sophomore year as a band, we wanted to send a quick note to thank you for your heartfelt support. Your encouragement and kindness have carried us along, and we’ve had such a blast creating and sharing our music with you. Below are a few updates as well as details of our final show of 2015.

Mostly we rock and roll. But sometimes we spreadsheet.

What a whirlwind year for us Deers. Our last few band meetings have included reviewing 2015’s successes and lessons learned to make 2016 even better. Upon reconciling our master spreadsheet we came across some RDR fun facts we thought you might enjoy:

-In 2015 we played 44 shows across 10 different cities, with venues ranging from outdoor stages to community centres, pubs, cafes and clubs

-Our most expensive road trip was the one where Adam’s car died in the middle of BC :|

-We’ve reached listeners across the globe including Scotland, Ireland, Belgium and South Africa

-Our record The War received radio play from CJSW, CKUA and daily rotation on CBC Radio 3 (among others)

-We were lucky enough to share our music and ideas on the Music 4 Life and Petrocast podcasts, live on CJSW radio and NUTV

And those are just some of the hard stats. They don’t speak to the number of amazing people we met, brilliant music community members we collaborated with and bands we shared stages with. Keeping the thank-you list on our record to a minimum was challenging so we won’t attempt it here, but know that we are happy to have you in our world as a friend and supporter - in fact we couldn't have had such a successful year without you.

Final 2015 show

We’re capping off our incredible year with a big party at one of our most favourite places: The Palomino! This Saturday November 21 we’ll be joined by both Alexa Borden and SAVK (!!!). When we’re not busy drooling over these amazing bands we’ll be on stage sharing our new tunes and favourite songs from the year, plus a special cover of one of our favourite iconic punk groups. Come celebrate with us!

How to look cool

1. Start a band

2. Secure gig at iconic local venue

3. Invite the ridiculously talented photographer Allison Seto to capture you on stage

4. Be yourself; somehow Allison will capture the most perfectly flattering moments of you in the zone

If you haven’t seen Allison’s shots of us, check out the photo section of our website. Her most recent series is from our album release party at the Palomino, and we’ll be lucky enough to have her with us again on November 21.

We realize it’s early, but before the December craze really sets in we want to wish you and yours a joyous holiday season and a New Year that’s filled with excitement and time spent on your passion. See you on Saturday or in early 2016!

With love,

The Deers

The Release

July 02, 2015  /  Run Deer Run

run_deer_run_the_war.jpg

It is difficult to describe how releasing The War felt. Much effort went into the process of creating the album, and release day meant the world (i.e. our followers and friends such as you) would be hearing it for the first time. The day was filled with mixed emotions of excitement, relief and nervous vulnerability. But being personally happy with how The War turned out really took the pressure off, knowing that we did everything we could to make our little record the best it could be. There were mixed feelings along the way, some days we loved listening to it and other days we weren’t as happy, but I suppose that’s a natural part of the process of making an album. Given that we didn’t set any firm expectations for the album’s final result, at times it was difficult to know what to feel. And as with all music, the listening experience is especially affected by one’s environment, mood and mode of listening. In the end, we’re so pleased with the result of everyone’s hard work, and we can both say that we love listening to it and especially enjoy playing it live.

We’ve been embarking on a series of mini-tours, playing shows in Vancouver, Banff and Edmonton with more upcoming shows booked across Western Canada. Meeting new people and bands in this great indie scene while playing our record live has been a trip to say the least, easily one of the best parts about promoting The War. The aim of this blog though is not to keep you updated on all our happenings, but moreso the personal experiences we have as we navigate the crazy world of starting and growing a band. Stay tuned here for more snippets and stories of our journey. If you are interested in goings on of us too, however, do sign up for our mailing list where you’ll receive all that good info: http://www.rundeerrunband.com/contact/

Find yer heart.

February 11, 2015  /  Run Deer Run

rdr_laura_adam_studio

“Do what you love and everything else will fall into place.”  Whether that ‘everything else’ means health, happiness, financial security, relationships, or all of the above, who’s to know? But we like to think that a lot of things have lined up in our favour to make the choice of doing what we love an easy one.

Yes, we were both recently employed by good, supportive companies, doing interesting work alongside great people. As with all jobs there were good days and bad ones, but mostly they were good. Who gets to direct photo shoots in sunny San Diego and who gets to help decide where it is that airplanes will fly? Who gets to work at a place that has grilled cheese parties to curb hangovers from celebrating with their co-workers? Who gets to lose at beer pong tournaments using coworker’s desks as playing surfaces - all in a day’s work? Who gets to proudly display the winning trophy of the annual salsa/guac-off competition proudly at their desk, much to their colleagues’ chagrin? (Jason if you’re reading this, fine it was a tie and we split the trophy, but everyone thought the voting was rigged anyway.)

When you make a big life change you often look for affirmations that tell you you’re doing the right thing. Sometimes you get them, other times you lie awake at night or pace around your apartment fending off panic attacks. But when those affirmations come, you grab ahold of them and use them to fuel you for the rough days to come. It’s booking a gig you never thought you’d get. It’s meeting other bands that are in it for the same reasons and get where you’re coming from. It’s making a record that went beyond your wildest fucking dreams. Those wins and affirmations that you find along your path come in all shapes and sizes. The key is to listen to them and know that they happened for a reason. Without getting too “energetic” and “moon cycle” on you, it feels like the universe is smiling at you, giving you that encouraging ass-pat to “get back in there champ”.

In a recent conversation with the budding Calgary music photographer Allison Seto, the subject of being willing to suffer for your craft, but not actually having to suffer for too long came up and really struck a chord with us. We both feel very lucky that we also have other passions and creative pursuits that happen to generate income while we’re pursing music. For Adam it’s being a freelance art director, designer and letterer, and for Laura it’s teaching yoga and pretending to be a business consultant. And if we didn’t have these passions, you can bet your bottom dollar we’d be hustling every free minute of the day doing whatever it takes to support ourselves.

We’re not trying to downplay any difficulties we’ve had with our respective decisions to pursue a living made from music, but truthfully we were both dealt fortunate hands in life and we’re in a position to take advantage of that. We were born in Canada, have had access to education and good qualities of life (our families are beyond supportive), and we’ve each had many people mentoring, encouraging and supporting us along the way. No matter how you slice it, that’s lucky. So once we realized that Run Deer Run is where we belonged, the choice wasn’t just easy, it was the only one. Sure we’ve given up creature comforts such as vacations, weeknight trips to the pub and being able to regularly purchase cheese, but there is no regret - in fact there’s nothing else we’d rather be doing. Right now, staying up until 3 am on a Saturday night writing grants, creating rock n roll spreadsheets and laying out our album liner notes is what we’re happy spending our time on. Just in case any of you thought we were cool (but actually, when you do see us in public catching shows and supporting our friends, please help us keep up the facade that we are indeed cool).

Closing the door to comfort, opening the door to creativity, and doing what makes our souls sing has affirmed that comfort is overrated, and we wouldn’t take anything back. In fact, we can’t wait to keep moving forward. So if you’ve been sitting on a passion and are hesitating - go do it. It might be for only 10 minutes a day at first, but trust us, doing what you love feels good. But above all else, just be yourself. Because that’s what’s really cool.

To quote a long time friend and collaborator Joel Houston: “Doubt is no virtue. Consider the end. Find yer heart.”

Yours with love (and that awkwardly-long hug),

The Deers

Whoah, it's 2015

January 20, 2015  /  Run Deer Run

Hi fawns,

While you’ve been toiling away on your New Year’s resolutions, or making excuses for why you’ve already given up, the Deers have been busy scheming up our plans to make 2015 a real treat. Here are a few highlights that are making us jump out of bed each morning (except mornings after our shows...those require sleep-ins and Gatorade).

Our first baby
To set the record straight, no Adam and Laura are not an “actual couple” and nope Laura is not pregnant. The baby we’re referring to is our first record! The Deers have been working hard on our writing game, breaking pencils and beads of sweat from our brows to deliver you our very first LP, The War. THANK YOU to everyone who has supported us via our Pledge campaign so far - last week you helped us reach our goal! There are still post production and record pressing costs to cover, and lucky for you (and us), there is still time to Pledge in case you’ve been dragging your heels or can’t decide on what awesome stuff you want to order www.pledgemusic.com/projects/rdr-the-war.

Calgary crew - mark your calendars
Earlier this month we kicked off the year with our 1-year anniversary show at Below Deck. Thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate with us and to For This Fire and The Sweets for putting on killer sets!  This was followed by a super fun night at Nite Owl with Alexa Borden and her lovely band, and Calgary newcomers Island in the Sky - we can’t wait to play with these rad dudes again! 2015 bookings are well underway and we are pumped to be playing great venues with some sweet local talent. More shows are being confirmed each week so keep up to date via www.rundeerrunband.com and our social media outlets (see bottom of this note). Here are our next couple, come have a good time with us:

Saturday, Feb 7: Wine-Ohs with Alexa Borden and Walden

Friday, Mar 6: Nite Owl with The Ashley Hundred and Landfork

Leaving our natural habitat
That’s right, The Deers are going on tour!  Over 3 weekends in March and April we will be touring around Alberta and beyond with a fantastic band from Edmonton, We Were Friends. We will keep you updated on our tour stops and hopefully will be in your city.  Don’t live in the west or want to travel someplace fun to see us play?  Fear not!  We plan to trek to Eastern Canada a couple of times this year.  We will keep you posted so that you can plan your summer with us.

A wise woman once said more is more and less is a bore.  We agree and have a few more tricks up our sleeves this year including music videos, cool collaborations with other artists and (fingers crossed) playing our first music festival.  Anything you want to see The Deers do this year?  Send us your ideas!  But keep it clean and respectable, people.

Get your daily dose of Deer
As with everything, the best way to stay on top of our happenings is social media.  If you haven’t already, like us, follow us, add us to your RSS feed. If all else fails send us a carrier pigeon and we’ll return it with our updates.

Thank you for reading and for your support, muchachos - we will see you soon!

We’ll be hitting the stage with The Ashleys again this coming Monday, November 10th for our first show at The Palomino. We hope to see your lovely faces there! http://www.thepalomino.ca/events/ashley-hundred-we-were-friends-run-deer-run

Most exciting of all, is that the approach of winter signals the start of our journey to recording our first LP, The War. We’ve put a lot of energy into writing and preparing, and in the next week or two we’ll be announcing pre-sale details. That’s where you’ll be able to purchase a copy of the LP (vinyl or digital) in advance of the release to help fund our project. Postcards From The Moon

September 03, 2014  /  Run Deer Run

In reflecting on what were the best days of the summer, the one-year anniversary of the YYC flood was surprisingly one of them. Bike rides, YYC Neighborhood Day at a beloved friend's home in Mission and discovering a new favourite band.

I first heard The Ashley Hundred while lining up at a park for free burgers. I was instantly blown away by their beautiful harmonies, catchy hooks and bouncy bass lines. After picking up an EP and a nice chat with one of the members, Carson, I immediately told Adam about them. The next day their EP, Postcards From the Moon, slid into my car's CD player and has yet to leave.

Seeing The Ashley Hundred's summer tour kick-off show alongside the talented Windigo at Broken City this past month solidified just how special this group is.  Not only are they the nicest bunch of humans you will meet, the on-stage connection and energy between the five members is amazing to watch.  The hooks are addicting, the builds are perfect and the honestly-delivered lyrics are wise beyond their years. And it’s all tied together by perfectly-blended harmonies and uniquely rhythmical drumming.  Both Adam and I are so happy to have connected with this band and are very excited for their bright future.

In just two short weeks we'll excitedly share the Republik stage with The Ashley Hundred as well as The Fox Who Slept The Day Away (think a down-tempo Caribou...we're so excited music like this exists in Calgary!).  Come see all of us.

Until then,

The Deers

The Space

July 27, 2014  /  Run Deer Run

It's said that when one door closes another one opens. Last week we closed the door to our beloved jam space in Adam's basement. The lease was up and we were left to find somewhere new. We departed with a sense of apprehension knowing that a new location would shift our dynamic; the jam space is everything.

Without realizing it we had become very attached to the space. The room held the energy, memories, frustrations, fresh starts and roller-coaster experiences of creating and growing our dear band. It was the recording studio for our demo. A beloved dumping ground for beer cans, honest words and personal struggles. The scene for new collaborations, creative kinship and light bulb moments. The first notes of our new songs bounced off of those walls, and the commitment to make music we love was born there. We were comfortable there.

So as we say goodbye and take our efforts into a new landscape we'll once again move out of our comfort zone. And supporting one another as we step outside of our comfort zones is what drives the music we create. Guess it was time to go after all.

The Year of the Deer

March 26, 2014  /  Run Deer Run

2014 may be the year of the horse, but for us it’s the year of the deer. We’re on a writing roll, booking shows, mapping out a small summer tour and planning an EP recording. You gotta strike while the iron is hot.

But first, a little history about how The Deers came together. After a few years of supporting each other’s music projects, we started jamming together every week or so with an aim to create a new sound, built from thoughtful minimalism, bright tones and driven rhythms (think Daughter or The Cults). But after a couple of months, it wasn’t working. The songs we played felt stale, we weren’t writing, and the sound we set out to create wasn’t coming. It was starting to become frustrating, but we kept playing and looking for new influences in the hopes that we’d break through our creative block.  After putting a fresh spin on tunes by a few of our favourite artists (LCD Soundsystem, Animal Collective, Lykke Li), we finally wrote a new song (Trespassers).  It was exactly the sound we wanted to create. After writing another new one (I’ll Say) we started looking for our first show.

In February Run Deer Run played an opening slot for local talents Heigh River at Below Deck Tavern in YYC. It was a stage we’d shared a few times so there was a familiar comfort, but the nerves were strong and we really wanted to play a tight set. People were piling in and the room was packed, and although the nerves were running high we were so in love with our new sound and couldn’t wait to share it. The night couldn’t have gone better - the crowd was awesome, we played better than we usually jam, and Heigh River was incredibly supportive. We were overwhelmed by the feedback we received. It confirmed we were doing something worthwhile and drove our desire to immerse ourselves in the YYC music community even further.

Coming off the high of our first show we decided it was time to do more writing, together and from scratch; stay tuned for an upcoming post about our process and writing style. With six original songs finished and a few new ones in the works, we’re itching to play more live shows. We have a few on the books that we’re so stoked for and we can’t wait to explore more of the YYC music scene and beyond by rocking new stages and checking out more homegrown talent. Keep in touch with us via Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, we hope to see your lovely face at one our shows soon.

With love,
The Deers
